Common pitfalls

  • Confusing 'implicit' with 'random guessing' (inferences must be based on textual clues).
  • Quoting entire paragraphs instead of selecting specific phrases.
  • Failing to paraphrase when asked to 'summarise' or 'synthesise' (just copying the text).
