Standard Circuit Symbols and Diagram Interpretation

2. Recall the standard symbol for each component.
3. Draw the battery symbol, ensuring the longer line is positive.
4. Draw the switch, resistor, and LED in series, connecting them with straight lines at right angles.
5. Ensure the LED is oriented correctly for forward bias (anode connected towards the positive terminal of the battery, cathode towards the negative, with the resistor usually placed to limit current).
The diagram should show a battery symbol (two cells in series, long line positive) connected in series to a push-to-make switch (two contacts with a diagonal line indicating closure), then a rectangular fixed resistor symbol labelled '220 Ω', followed by an LED symbol (triangle with a bar and two arrows pointing away, with the triangle's point facing the negative terminal). All connections are straight lines.
Common pitfalls
- Confusing similar symbols, such as a cell and a battery, or a fixed resistor and a variable resistor.
- Drawing messy diagrams with ambiguous connections or incorrect orientations for polarised components like LEDs or diodes, which will prevent the circuit from functioning as intended.

- For interpreting component values like voltage and resistance.
- Understanding that current is a flow of charge, which is represented by connections in a diagram.
- Defining resistance, which is a property of many components represented by symbols.
